GENERAL ENGLISH COURSES

General English

The General English classes are open to all students wishing to improve their English in an open and friendly classroom environment. With small classes and individual attention, this course is a great way to learn English.

The General English courses provide a balanced approach to learning English with a strong focus on the four language skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. There is also a strong focus on improving student’s grammar and pronunciation.

You have two options to choose from: Half Day or Full Day. The popular Half Day course (semi-intensive) allows you to learn English in the mornings and spend your afternoons exploring Cape Town and enjoying all that the city has to offer. The Full Day course (intensive) provides you with more time in class so that you can make faster progress. Students choose this option if they have less time in Cape Town and want to learn as much English as possible.

English 101

 Take this course if you have never studied English before.

English 101 is a specially designed course for beginner students (Level A1). It aims at helping students overcome language barriers and gain confidence. By taking this course students will have an easy way to begin learning English with other students at the same level as them in a supportive and understanding environment. English 101 students will gain the basic foundations of grammar and vocabulary needed to begin their English learning journey.

  • Class size: Maximum 8 students
  • Half Day Course: 15 hours per week (9:00 to 12:30)
  • Full Day Course: 22.5 hours per week (9:00 to 15:00)

English One Solo

Solo lessons are useful for when you want a private teacher to focus on your needs only. This flexible course can be tailored to give you exactly what you want and will give you the best opportunity to make fast progress with your English skills. With private classes the focus is completely on your needs and wants, giving you control of your learning experience.

  • Class size: Maximum 1 student
  • Course Starts: Any day
  • Minimum Length: 7.5 hours
  • Levels: All
  • Classes generally start in the afternoon, but special arrangements can be made upon request

 Take this course if you need English skills for your job, for your professional development or to improve your CV.

The English for Business course is designed to be flexible and adaptable with a strong focus on the student’s or company’s needs. This means that you can choose which modules to take so that your time is well spent in the classroom.

This course focuses on the communicative skills needed in the workplace as well as the language and skills required to be successful in meetings, giving presentations, conducting negotiations and networking. Your confidence and vocabulary will be developed through our interactive classes with intelligent insights and positive feedback.

Academic English

 Take this course if you need to take an English exam or are studying at an English university.

The Academic English course is here to assist students who are studying, or want to study, at an English university. There is a strong focus on academic reading and writing as well as improving student’s listening skills.

The course is also designed to prepare students for various English exams such as the Cambridge PET, FCE or CAE exams, as well as the important IELTS test. This part of the course works on developing your exam skills as well as improving your use of English.

Maritime English

 Take this course if you are a seafarer or are involved in the Maritime Industry.

Maritime English is suited to all seafarers including officers, ratings and cadets who need to ensure their level of English meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation’s International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The course combines a solid foundation of essential English communication skills with the important Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) that all seafarers need to know. As it is important to not only know the SMCP it is recommended that General English classes are combined with this course.

The Maritime English course has been designed in accordance with the IMO Model Course 3.17: Maritime English and can be used to prepare students for the MarTEL exam.

English for Aviation

 Take this course if you are a pilot or ATC needing to meet your English language training requirements.

The English for Aviation course is useful for students who need to develop and improve their skills within the aviation industry. The course focuses on helping students gain the necessary skills to understand and communicate fluently and accurately in English.

The major goal of this course is to ensure that you can perform communicative tasks in English effectively in non-routine and unexpected operational situations.

Modules include:

  • Language and communication in aviation
  • The language of flying (ICAO)
  • Ground movements and communication on the ground
  • Safety and emergency situations
  • Approach and landing incidents

 Take this course if you are working in a managerial position in the Oil and Gas industry.

This Oil and Gas course is aimed at industry professionals involved in the Oil and Gas industry. The focus of the course is to develop your essential professional language and increase your effectiveness when you work in English.

  • Working on a rig (Rig locations, Health & Safety, Rig Automation)

English for Medicine

 Take this course if you are a medical practitioner or are studying medicine.

The Medical English course has been designed to assist students in various areas of the medical profession. There is a strong focus on developing the ability to communicate with patients, medical colleagues and paramedical staff. This course will improve fluency in reading medical journals and textbooks and help in preparing students to study or work in an English speaking country. If you are a medical student in the clinical phase of your studies this course will be of great benefit to you.

Hospitality English

 Take this course if you work in the hospitality industry.

Hospitality English is ideal for any front-line employees of hotels or restaurants needing to communicate confidently in English and maintain good customer relations. This course is very flexible and can be tailored into specialised modules based on your specific needs.

English for Customer Care

 Take this course if you work on the front-line for your company, dealing face to face with customers.

This short course focuses on customer care success, customer call-centre telephone etiquette, the five C’s of customer care writing, complaint strategies and policies, eloquence and courtesy, problem-solving, basic socialising language and more.

English for Customer Care is an express one week course (15 hours only). This course is highly recommended for proficient speakers of English who are already working in a customer care capacity such as in a bank, hotel, call centre, tourism office and are looking to streamline their language skills.

Legal English

 Take this course if you are studying towards a law degree or other work within the legal profession.

The Legal English course is skills-based and designed for law students or those about to enter English-medium tertiary studies in law. It focuses on the necessary skills needed to listen to lectures or seminars. It also equips students with specialist legal vocabulary and language to successfully participate in a law faculty.

Technical English

 Take this course if you are an engineer or work within scientific fields.

The Technical English course is direct, concise and is designed for students who need to use English in a scientific or engineering environment.

It introduces the vocabulary and language required to communicate and comprehend basic technical concepts in fields such as algebra, geometry, chemistry and physics. A variety of technical areas are explored such as Points and Lines, Arithmetic, Surfaces and Angles, Elements and Compounds, Structures and Plans, Micro-machines and ICT and much more.

English for Human Resources

 Take this course if you are studying towards or working in the Human Resources or Personnel Management field.

The English for Human Resources course focuses on written and spoken communication for key professional needs such as conducting interviews, delivering coaching, counselling and mentoring as well as creating disciplinary and grievance procedures. The course is designed around 10 case studies from multinational companies such as Capo Verde International, Marks and Spencer’s, Moscotel and Maracuja’.

English for Environmental Science

 Take this course if you are studying towards or working in the Environmental Science field.

The English for Environmental Science course is designed for students studying Environmental Science, or those wishing to attend international conferences or seminars. The course is designed to help students cope with the academic texts and lectures that are involved in studying this science, or having to prepare and present a lecture at a seminar.

Topics include energy resources, ecosystems, recycling waste, preserving biodiversity, sustainability, digital mapping and more.

English One Express Courses

Express Courses are specially designed one week courses which target vocabulary, language and communicative skills needed within a certain sector. They are highly recommended for independent speakers of English (B1+) already working in the sector and are looking to improve their language skills.

All courses are supplemented with skills-based General English.

English One Express Logistics

Recommended for shipping agents, customs brokers and freight forwarders. The course caterers for students of management-level positions as well as those in warehousing or administration.

English One Express Sales and Purchasing (available as a supplement to English for Business)

Indicated for Sales and Purchasing professionals who manage international clients, deal with foreign suppliers, attend international exhibitions, draw up proposals and deal with complaints or inquiries. Although this specialization pursues many different objectives within business, both require fluent business English in order to be successful.

English One Express Marketing and Advertising

Available for anyone working in Marketing and Advertising. Despite it being a broad professional area, one thing is certain – English is the preferred professional medium, particularly with the technology available. Whether it is liaising with clients, discussing advertising campaigns, establishing a marketing plan or writing a press release – using English is increasingly becoming more important. Key responsibilities within both departments are covered with particular emphasis on specialist vocabulary relating to branding, market research, public relations and more.

English One Express Customer Care (available as a supplement to English for Hospitality)

Indicated for people already working in customer care services such as in a bank, hotel, call centre or tourism office and are looking to streamline their language skills in order to confidently and successfully communicate with clients. This Express course focuses on key expressions and vocabulary but it also delves into strategies related to the effective use of English in a business context.

English One Express Cabin Crew (available as a longer course or as a supplement to English for Aviation)

Indicated for cabin crew and flight attendants. It focuses on how to communicate clearly, politely and assertively in a variety of on-board scenarios. Essential language skills and vocabulary needed to effectively communicate information about pre-flight, in-flight, take-off, descent, landing and lay-over are introduced and developed. Topics that will be covered include explaining services, solving seating problems and attending to ill passengers.

English One Express Football

An innovative course that is designed specifically for people working in or preparing to work in the football industry, from coaches and managers to the football players themselves. This course will equip students with the vocabulary and language skills needed to communicate confidently and understand situations in a football context. A special reading supplement “The Beautiful Game” is also included.
