How to Pronounce the -ED ending in English

There are 3 different ways to pronounce the -ed ending in English. Watch this video to see how and when to use each version.

THE PAST PARTICIPLE

There are 3 ways to pronounce the past participle of “-ed”. Which version you use depends on 3 different things:

  1. When to use /ɪd/:

When a word ends on either /d/ or /t/ then you use this version of -ed.

  1. When to use /d/:

When a word ends on a “voiced” sound, then you use this version of -ed.

  1. When to use /t/:

When a word ends on an “unvoiced” sound, then you use this version of -ed.
